Nootka Cypress ‘Jubilee’ – Chamaecyparis nootkatensis is a graceful, narrow upright conifer whose distinctive weeping habit brings real architectural presence to gardens. This exceptional selection forms a slender spire clothed in deep, rich-green foliage, with pendulous branches that drape elegantly against the trunk like cascading curtains. The weeping branches create a remarkably tight silhouette, making ‘Jubilee’ ideal for smaller spaces where vertical impact is desired without excessive width.
The dark green foliage completely cloaks the tree from top to bottom, creating a solid column of texture and colour throughout the year. Unlike many columnar conifers, ‘Jubilee’ develops fascinating character with age, often producing secondary sub-leaders that emerge from the main trunk. These additional uprights create a grove-like cluster effect, giving mature specimens an almost sculptural quality. Each tree develops its own personality, with the gracefully draping branches resembling arms extending from the central spire.
This fast-growing selection maintains its narrow form without requiring pruning, making it an excellent choice for formal gardens, contemporary planting schemes, or as a dramatic focal point. The pendulous branching is more pronounced than many weeping forms, yet the growth remains tightly controlled against the trunk, resulting in a tree that is both elegant and space-efficient. After ten years, expect your specimen to reach 4 to 6 metres in height whilst remaining just 1.5 metres wide, with an annual growth rate of 20 to 45 centimetres.
The rich evergreen foliage provides year-round interest and structure, offering a valuable vertical element that contrasts beautifully with rounded shrubs and spreading perennials. ‘Jubilee’ works equally well as a specimen tree, planted in pairs to frame an entrance, or grouped to create a dramatic grove effect. Its narrow habit makes it particularly suitable for planting near buildings, along driveways, or in mixed borders where space is at a premium.
Care Guide
Plant in moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Chamaecyparis nootkatensis prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil and benefits from shelter from cold, drying winds, particularly when young. Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish a deep root system, then water during extended dry periods.
Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring and mulch around the base with organic matter to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch away from the trunk to prevent rot. This species copes well with our maritime climate and needs no routine pruning, though any dead or damaged growth can be removed in late spring.
‘Jubilee’ is hardy and tolerates winter cold, though young plants appreciate protection from harsh easterly winds. The dense foliage provides excellent shelter and nesting opportunities for garden birds. Pests and diseases are rarely problematic, though ensure good air circulation and avoid waterlogged conditions to prevent root issues.
