The Hinoki cypress Chamaecyparis obtusa is also known as the Japanese cypress. The ‘Aurora’ cultivar stands out thanks to its vibrant colouring.
‘Aurora’ is loved for its conical compact growth habit, which means it needs very little maintenance.
‘Aurora’ has a slow growth rate and stays compact. It usually forms a rounded bottom with a pointed top.
‘Aurora’ needs well-drained soil, just like other Hinoki cypress varieties. It can cope with different soil types provided they don’t hold too much water. It performs best in full sun, which brings out its golden colour, but also grows well in partial shade.
With its lovely golden green colour and neat shape, ‘Aurora’ works brilliantly for highlighting rock gardens, borders, or as a single feature plant in a pot or container. It’s often used in mixed planting schemes to create colour contrast alongside other plants.
‘Aurora’ seldom needs pruning because it grows so slowly. Water it regularly when young and during long dry periods, but make sure it’s not sitting in waterlogged soil.
Hinoki cypress ‘Aurora’ Chamaecyparis obtusa is very hardy once established and can cope with cold down to -20C.
