The Monterey Cypress ‘Wilma’ Cupressus macrocarpa ‘Wilma’ makes an excellent addition to smaller gardens. This dwarf, golden conifer naturally develops into a tidy, globe-shaped form without requiring any pruning. The bright, sunny yellow foliage provides wonderful colour during winter months when most other plants have died back. This compact variety stays naturally small and dense, typically growing to just 1-2 metres over several years, unlike the much larger parent species.
The small leaves grow closely packed together, giving the plant a dense, soft texture. The foliage releases a pleasant lemon fragrance when touched. It’s ideal for providing constant colour and form in gardens throughout the seasons. The golden tones remain vibrant all year, sometimes showing touches of lime green during summer months. It looks fantastic in containers on patios or as a colourful feature in mixed borders. This miniature form offers all the appeal of the Monterey Cypress in a size perfect for today’s gardens.
‘Wilma’ is straightforward to grow and adapts to most garden situations. Position it in full sun for the brightest golden foliage – shadier spots will cause the colour to turn more green than yellow. It requires well-draining soil but adapts to various soil types. Water well during establishment, but once settled, it tolerates dry periods reasonably well. Regular pruning isn’t necessary to maintain its ball shape, though light trimming can be done if desired. This hardy little conifer handles coastal locations well and suits windswept positions. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring for container-grown plants.
