Hinoki cypress *Chamaecyparis obtusa* is also known as Japanese cypress. The ‘Aurora’ cultivar stands out amongst the many varieties thanks to its vibrant colouring.
‘Aurora’ is loved for its neat conical shape and compact growth, which means it needs very little looking after.
This variety grows at a slow pace and stays nicely compact. It usually develops a rounded bottom section that tapers to a pointed top.
‘Aurora’ does best in well-draining soil, just like other Hinoki cypress varieties. It will cope with different soil types provided they don’t stay waterlogged. Full sun brings out the best golden colour, though it will also grow happily in partial shade.
The gorgeous golden-green foliage and tidy form make ‘Aurora’ perfect for rock gardens, borders, or as a feature plant in pots and containers. It works brilliantly in mixed plantings where its colour creates lovely contrast with neighbouring plants.
You’ll rarely need to prune ‘Aurora’ because of how slowly it grows. Water regularly when young and during long dry periods, but avoid letting it sit in waterlogged conditions.
Hinoki cypress *Chamaecyparis obtusa* ‘Aurora’ is extremely hardy once established and will cope with temperatures as low as -20C.
