The Hinoki cypress Chamaecyparis obtusa is also known as the Japanese cypress. ‘Birgit’ stands out as a particularly uncommon and quite rare cultivar amongst the many varieties available.
‘Birgit’ has a distinctive tight, clumping growth pattern that looks rather like coral.
This variety grows at a slow pace and stays compact in size.
‘Birgit’ shares the same preferences as other Hinoki cypress Chamaecyparis obtusa varieties, favouring well-drained soil. It can cope with various soil types provided they don’t hold too much water. Whilst it thrives in full sun, it also performs well in partial shade.
Its distinctive look and compact nature make ‘Birgit’ perfect for adding interest to rock gardens, borders, or as a feature plant in pots and containers.
Pruning is seldom needed for ‘Birgit’ because of its slow growth. Water regularly during the first few years and in long dry periods, but avoid waterlogged conditions.
Hinoki cypress Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Birgit’ is hardy once established and can cope with cold temperatures down to -20C.
