The Hinoki cypress Chamaecyparis obtusa goes by several names including Japanese cypress. The ‘Nana Aurea’ cultivar stands out as a compact, slow-growing dwarf evergreen conifer that’s easy to manage.
This variety produces thick golden-yellow foliage arranged in distinctive concave sprays.
‘Nana Aurea’ develops at a steady, slow pace and stays reasonably compact, typically reaching around 2.5 metres tall.
Similar to other Chamaecyparis obtusa types, ‘Nana Aurea’ prefers soil that drains well. It adapts to various soil conditions provided they don’t hold too much water. Whilst it performs best in full sun, it also grows happily in partial shade.
Its naturally compact habit makes ‘Nana Aurea’ perfect for adding interest to rock gardens and border displays.
‘Nana Aurea’ rarely requires pruning due to its slow growth rate. Regular watering is essential during its early years and in prolonged dry spells, but it’s essential not to let the plant sit in soggy soil.
Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Nana Aurea’ is hardy when mature and can withstand cold temperatures down to -20C.
