Japanese Red Cedar *Cryptomeria japonica* ‘Spiralis’ is a striking evergreen that adds something special to any garden. This variety is known for its distinctive twisted growth pattern, which creates a fascinating corkscrew effect that draws the eye. The foliage is deep green, developing lovely bronze hints during winter months for year-round appeal.

‘Spiralis’ forms a slender, upright tree that typically reaches 3-4 metres in height over a decade. Its compact width makes it ideal for tighter spaces or where you want height without spread. It also works brilliantly in large pots for patios and balconies.

The real charm of this tree lies in how it adds drama and texture to gardens. The spiralling branches create ever-changing light and shadow patterns throughout the day, making it a natural focal point wherever it’s planted.

Many gardeners love ‘Spiralis’ for its distinctive appearance and low-maintenance character. Once established, it’s quite self-sufficient and tough enough to handle winter conditions. It also tolerates urban pollution well, making it suitable for city gardens.

This cedar fits into various garden themes beautifully. It can bring character to formal settings or provide structure in modern, relaxed designs. Use it solo as a statement piece, plant two to mark an entrance, or incorporate it into mixed plantings.

Bird lovers will appreciate that ‘Spiralis’ offers excellent shelter and nesting opportunities. Its thick growth provides safe havens for wildlife throughout the seasons.

For those wanting a plant that delivers impact with minimal fuss, ‘Spiralis’ ticks all the boxes. It maintains its sculptural form and rich colouring across all seasons, ensuring your garden always has visual interest.

Japanese Red Cedar has been cultivated here since Victorian times, though the ‘Spiralis’ form is a newer addition. It offers a contemporary take on this traditional favourite, perfect for those seeking something distinctive.

For gardeners wanting lasting structure and an unusual centrepiece, Japanese Red Cedar ‘Spiralis’ makes an outstanding choice. Its twisted silhouette, rich tones, and straightforward care requirements make it a worthwhile investment for any outdoor space.

Looking after Japanese Red Cedar ‘Spiralis’ is straightforward, which is good news for gardeners. Plant it in a spot that gets full sun or partial shade. It prefers moist, well-drained soil but is adaptable to various soil types. Water regularly when it’s first planted to help it settle in. Once established, it’s quite tolerant of dry spells but will appreciate occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Feed it with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Pruning isn’t necessary to maintain its spiral shape, but you can remove any dead or damaged branches if needed. It’s generally pest and disease-free, but keep an eye out for any signs of stress. ‘Spiralis’ is hardy enough to cope with UK winters without extra protection, though young plants may benefit from shelter from strong winds.
