Monterey Cypress ‘Wilma’ *Cupressus macrocarpa* ‘Wilma’ is a special variety of the standard Monterey Cypress. This particular cultivar stands out thanks to its unusual looks and lemon-scented leaves.
‘Wilma’ is a compact to medium-sized evergreen conifer with an upright, columnar form. It usually reaches heights of 6 to 10 feet (1.8 to 3 metres) and spreads roughly 1 to 2 feet (0.3 to 0.6 metres) wide. The slender, upright shape works brilliantly in smaller gardens or as a feature plant.
The real showstopper is ‘Wilma’s bright golden-yellow foliage. The leaves grow in upward-facing sprays and bring a cheerful splash of colour to gardens. Crush the needles between your fingers and you’ll catch a lovely lemony scent.
For the best golden-yellow colour, plant ‘Wilma’ in full sun. It keeps its bright foliage throughout winter when it gets plenty of light.
This variety grows quite slowly, putting on roughly 6 inches (15 cm) each year. The slow growth means you won’t need much pruning or upkeep.
‘Wilma’ usually has attractive pale reddish-brown bark that looks great against the bright foliage.
**Cultural Requirements**
Like most Thuja, the ‘Wilma’ prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types. It thrives in full sun but can also tolerate partial shade. However, to maintain its vibrant gold colouration, a sunny location is optimal. It’s reasonably tolerant of both dry and moist conditions, once established, but it’s best to avoid extremely wet sites.
**Uses in Gardens**
Its compact size and striking colouration make it an excellent choice for:
1. **Specimen Planting:** As a focal point in smaller gardens or mixed borders.
2. **Foundation Plantings:** Near buildings or along borders.
3. **Rock Gardens:** Given its smaller size and vibrant colour.
4. **Hedges:** When planted en masse.
**Maintenance**
As a slow-grower, ‘Wilma’ requires minimal pruning. However, occasional pruning to maintain its shape and remove any dead or damaged branches may be necessary.
**Hardiness**
‘Wilma’ is very hardy and can tolerate cold winters, down to -20C.
