The Dawn Redwood ‘Matthaei’ is an extraordinary dwarf cultivar that stands apart from its towering cousins with its compact habit and distinctive bronzy foliage. This remarkable selection originated from a witches’ broom discovered in 1974 at the Matthaei Botanical Garden in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and has since become a treasured specimen among connoisseur collectors.

What makes ‘Matthaei’ truly special is its unique colouring. Unlike the typical bright green of standard Dawn Redwoods, this cultivar maintains a beautiful bronzy hue throughout the entire growing season. The soft, feathery foliage emerges with bronze tones in spring and sustains this warm, coppery colour through summer, creating a stunning contrast against greens in the garden. Come autumn, the needles deepen to rich russet shades before dropping in winter, reminding us that this is one of the few deciduous conifers.

The compact, dwarf growth habit makes ‘Matthaei’ infinitely more manageable than the species, which can reach towering heights. This cultivar develops a neat, dense form that suits smaller gardens, courtyard spaces, or even large containers on patios. Its refined stature means you can enjoy the prehistoric charm of a Dawn Redwood without requiring acres of space.

Despite its ancient lineage – Dawn Redwoods were thought extinct until rediscovered in China in the 1940s – this cultivar adapts beautifully to modern gardens. The architectural form and unusual foliage colour make it an exceptional focal point, whilst the deciduous nature provides seasonal interest that evergreens simply cannot match.

Care Guide for British Climate

Dawn Redwood ‘Matthaei’ thrives in British conditions, appreciating our moderate temperatures and reliable rainfall. Plant in a sunny or partially shaded position with plenty of space for root development. This tree performs best in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, though it tolerates a range of soil types including clay.

Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish a strong root system. Once established, ‘Matthaei’ tolerates brief dry periods, though it genuinely prefers consistent moisture. In containers, ensure regular watering as pots dry out faster than open ground.

Feed in early spring with a general-purpose fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and maintain that distinctive bronze foliage colour. A mulch of organic matter around the base helps retain moisture and suppresses weeds whilst slowly improving soil structure.

Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing any dead or damaged branches in late winter. The naturally neat habit requires little intervention to maintain its attractive form. This cultivar is remarkably hardy, tolerating our coldest winters without protection.

Watch for the fresh spring growth emerging in April, and enjoy the seasonal transformation through to the russet autumn display before the needles drop, revealing the attractive fibrous bark beneath.
