Japanese Red Cedar Cryptomeria japonica ‘Spiralis’ is a stunning evergreen that brings drama and style to any garden. This remarkable variety is known for its distinctive twisted growth pattern, with branches that spiral upwards around the central trunk, forming an impressive corkscrew appearance. It’s guaranteed to catch the eye and spark conversations with anyone who visits your garden.
‘Spiralis’ develops into a tall, narrow column, typically reaching 4-6 metres in height over two decades. Its slender form makes it ideal for compact gardens or where you want to create height without using much horizontal space. It works brilliantly for framing doorways, creating a standout feature, or bringing structure to mixed planting schemes.
The tree offers fantastic seasonal appeal throughout the year. During spring and summer months, you’ll enjoy fresh, vibrant green foliage. As autumn arrives, the leaves shift to attractive bronze shades, bringing warmth to your garden during the cooler season. Through winter, its distinctive twisted shape continues to provide visual appeal when many other plants have died back.
Many gardeners appreciate ‘Spiralis’ for being so easy to manage. After it’s settled in, it requires minimal attention. It’s tough enough to handle British winters and typically stays free from pest and disease problems. This gives you less maintenance work and more time to sit back and admire your garden.
This cedar suits many different garden approaches. It can bring formality to classic garden designs or introduce an artistic touch to modern layouts. Its unusual shape naturally draws attention and creates a sense of movement within your planting scheme.
Those who enjoy encouraging wildlife will find that ‘Spiralis’ offers good shelter for birds and smaller creatures. The thick growth provides safe spots for nesting and protection from threats.
If you want a plant that performs well throughout the seasons and offers something genuinely distinctive, ‘Spiralis’ fits the bill perfectly. Its remarkable twisted form and seasonal colour changes ensure your garden maintains interest all year round.
For gardeners looking to add year-round structure and a touch of the unusual to their gardens, Japanese Red Cedar ‘Spiralis’ is an excellent option. Its striking spiral form, changing colours, and easy-care nature make it a valuable addition to any outdoor space.
Looking after Japanese Red Cedar ‘Spiralis’ is straightforward, which is good news for gardeners. Plant it in a spot that gets full sun or partial shade. It prefers moist, well-drained soil but is adaptable to various soil types. Water regularly when it’s first planted to help it settle in. Once established, it’s quite tolerant of dry spells but will appreciate occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Feed it with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Pruning isn’t necessary to maintain its spiral shape, but you can remove any dead or damaged branches if needed. It’s generally pest and disease-free, but keep an eye out for any signs of stress. ‘Spiralis’ is hardy enough to cope with UK winters without extra protection, though young plants may benefit from shelter from strong winds.
