The Nootka Cypress ‘Moonshot’ is a spectacular evergreen conifer that brings architectural elegance and year-round interest to gardens. This striking cultivar of Chamaecyparis nootkatensis features distinctively narrow, columnar growth with gracefully pendulous branches that create a refined, weeping effect. The foliage displays beautiful blue-green tones that shimmer in sunlight, whilst the naturally compact form makes ‘Moonshot’ an excellent choice for adding vertical drama without overwhelming smaller spaces.
This magnificent specimen works wonderfully as a focal point in mixed borders, where its slender silhouette provides a sophisticated contrast to rounded shrubs and perennials. The weeping branch tips add movement and textural interest throughout the seasons, whilst the dense evergreen foliage offers valuable structure during winter months when many other plants have died back. ‘Moonshot’ also excels in contemporary garden designs, where its clean lines and elegant form complement modern architecture beautifully.
Native to the coastal regions of North America, the Nootka Cypress is naturally adapted to cool, moist conditions, making it perfectly suited to the British climate. This particular cultivar maintains its neat, upright habit with minimal intervention, rarely requiring pruning to keep its attractive shape. The aromatic foliage releases a pleasant fragrance when brushed, adding another sensory dimension to your garden experience.
At 175-200cm in its 15-litre container, this mature specimen offers instant impact and saves years of waiting for a smaller plant to establish. It’s an investment piece that immediately transforms garden spaces with its commanding presence and refined beauty.
Care Guide for British Climate
Plant your Nootka Cypress ‘Moonshot’ in a position with full sun to partial shade, though it performs best with good light levels. The soil should be moist but well-drained – whilst this conifer appreciates consistent moisture, it won’t tolerate waterlogged conditions. Enrich heavy clay soils with organic matter and grit to improve drainage before planting.
Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to help establish a strong root system, particularly during dry spells in spring and summer. Once established, ‘Moonshot’ becomes reasonably drought-tolerant, though it will always appreciate moisture during prolonged dry periods. Apply a generous layer of mulch around the base each spring to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Feed annually in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser designed for evergreen conifers. This supports healthy foliage colour and steady growth throughout the season. The naturally compact form requires little to no pruning, though you can remove any dead or damaged branches in late spring if necessary. Avoid hard pruning into old wood, as conifers generally won’t regenerate from bare branches.
‘Moonshot’ is remarkably hardy and tolerates exposed positions well, though shelter from the harshest winter winds will help protect the foliage from browning. The pendulous branch tips are naturally resilient and bounce back after snow or ice. This low-maintenance conifer rarely suffers from pests or diseases, making it an excellent choice for gardeners seeking year-round beauty without constant attention.
