Chinese White Pine *Pinus armandii* is quite uncommon in Britain but this medium-sized conifer adapts well to our conditions. Works nicely as a garden specimen or can be trained as bonsai. This tough species comes from the mountains of southwest China and handles different conditions and heights well. It’s flexible enough to succeed in various gardens.

The tree produces drooping blue-green needles, reaching 15cm in length, which grow in clusters of five even when young.

Chinese White Pine *Pinus armandii* forms a medium to large evergreen that usually grows 20 to 50 metres tall (66 to 164 feet). The tree develops a cone-like or upright shape with a straight main trunk and thick, wide-spreading branches.

The foliage consists of thin needles grouped in bundles of five. These are narrow, dark green, and grow roughly 10 to 15 centimetres long (4 to 6 inches).

This pine produces fairly big cones, around 10 to 20 centimetres long (4 to 8 inches). They’re tube-shaped and often show purple colour when young. When fully developed, the cones become brown and drop their seeds.

Armand pine likes free-draining, acid soil and naturally grows in mixed woodland alongside other conifers and deciduous trees.

Tough enough for most British locations even during harsh winters (-15C to -10C)
