The Bhutan Pine Pinus wallichiana is a magnificent and imposing tree that reaches impressive heights of 30 to 50 metres (98 to 164 feet), sometimes growing even taller at maturity. This species displays a straight, columnar trunk covered in rough, greyish-brown bark that develops deep furrows as it ages. The branches grow horizontally and are evenly distributed along the trunk.
The most distinctive characteristic of the Bhutan Pine is its attractive, elongated needles. These needles are usually 12 to 20 centimetres (5 to 8 inches) long and grow in bundles of five. They’re dark green in colour and hang gracefully downwards, giving the tree an elegant appearance.
This pine produces egg-shaped cones measuring 8 to 15 centimetres (3 to 6 inches) long. The cones start off green before turning brown as they ripen. These cones hold the tree’s seeds and play a crucial role in reproduction.
The Bhutan Pine flourishes in mountainous areas with good drainage and plenty of sunlight. It’s perfectly suited to cold and temperate conditions, which makes it ideal for high-altitude locations. After planting, these pines need very little care, just the odd bit of pruning to maintain their shape or thin out branches.
Gardeners prize Bhutan Pines for their impressive looks and ability to cope with tough growing conditions. They’re commonly found in parks, spacious gardens, and tree collections, where their towering height and beautiful needles create stunning focal points. Their thick foliage also offers excellent shade and wind shelter.
In its native habitat, the Bhutan Pine has cultural importance and is occasionally harvested for timber in building and woodworking. Some local communities also use it in traditional remedies.
