The Turkish Pine Pinus brutia adds Mediterranean flair to gardens. This impressive evergreen develops into a splendid specimen with its distinctive broad, umbrella-like canopy. The long, vivid green needles shimmer in sunlight, providing attractive colour throughout the year. As the tree ages, the bark takes on an appealing reddish-brown hue that looks particularly good in winter. This pine suits larger gardens well, eventually reaching 15-20 metres tall given enough time.
It’s a hardy tree that thrives in coastal spots, making it ideal for gardens near the sea. The Turkish Pine also deals well with dry periods once its roots are established. During spring and summer months, new growth shows off a particularly fresh green shade. Its thick foliage makes excellent nesting sites for birds, encouraging more wildlife into your garden. Native to the eastern Mediterranean region, this pine has shown it can adapt brilliantly to British conditions.
Plant your Turkish Pine in full sun or partial shade, in well-drained soil. While it prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil, it will tolerate most soil types as long as they don’t get waterlogged. Water regularly in the first growing season to help establish a strong root system, but after that, it’s quite drought-tolerant. No regular pruning is needed – simply remove any dead or crossing branches in late winter. This pine doesn’t need feeding in most garden soils, though a general fertiliser in spring can be helpful in very poor soils.
