The Lacebark Pine Pinus bungeana is an absolutely cracking evergreen that’ll be the talk of any garden. This slow-growing beauty is celebrated for its remarkable bark, which flakes off in irregular sections to show off a brilliant mosaic of green, white, and purple shades – it’s rather like a natural jigsaw puzzle. Reaching heights of around 10-20 metres at a leisurely pace, this tree is definitely one for the patient gardener, but the payoff is spectacular. Young trees form a neat pyramid shape, whilst mature specimens develop a more spreading, open canopy that’s really quite impressive.

The bright green needles grow in clusters of three, keeping the tree looking fresh and lively throughout the year. Come springtime, you’ll notice little purple cones appearing, which gradually turn light brown as they ripen over a year or two. These cones are fairly compact for a pine, typically measuring 5-7 cm in length.

This pine makes a brilliant talking point in gardens. That distinctive bark means it works wonderfully as a feature tree, ideal for adding interest to bigger plots. Wildlife loves it too, with birds and small creatures finding good shelter amongst its branches. Back in its homeland of China, it’s seen as a tree of long life and you’ll often find it growing around temples and traditional gardens.

Plant your Lacebark Pine in a spot with full sun and well-drained soil. It’s not too picky about soil type but doesn’t like sitting in wet feet. Once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant. Pruning isn’t usually necessary unless you’re after a particular shape. It’s generally pest and disease resistant, but keep an eye out for any signs of needle blight or bark beetles. A bit of mulch around the base can help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
