The Japanese Red Pine Alice Verkade Pinus densiflora makes a lovely focal point for gardens with its striking red bark and elegant spreading habit. This particular variety is well-suited to our climate and will grow happily in different soil conditions, coping well with both dry spells and wetter periods.
Gardeners appreciate this tree for being fairly easy to look after whilst still providing real visual impact. The colourful needles bring texture and interest to planting schemes, and the tree’s attractive form keeps gardens looking good throughout the year. Wildlife benefits too, as birds find both shelter and food amongst its branches.
Alice Verkade does best when planted in full sun or partial shade, developing into a compact and well-proportioned specimen over time.
The Japanese Red Pine ‘Alice Verkade’ requires minimal care once established. It prefers a sunny to partially shaded spot in the garden. Water young trees regularly until they are fully established. Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Annual pruning is not necessary but remove any dead or damaged branches to maintain its appearance and health.
