The Bhutan Pine is a grand and impressive tree that reaches heights of 30 to 50 metres (98 to 164 feet) at maturity, sometimes growing even taller. It has a straight, upright trunk covered in rough, greyish-brown bark that develops deep furrows as it ages. The branches grow horizontally and are evenly distributed along the trunk.
The most distinctive characteristic of the Bhutan Pine is its lengthy, narrow needles. These needles are usually 12 to 20 centimetres (5 to 8 inches) long and grow in bundles of five. They’re dark green with an elegant, weeping habit that gives the tree its graceful look.
The Bhutan Pine bears egg-shaped cones measuring 8 to 15 centimetres (3 to 6 inches) long. These cones start off green and turn brown as they ripen. They hold the tree’s seeds and play a vital role in reproduction.
This pine does best in mountainous areas with good drainage and plenty of sun. It’s perfectly suited to cold and temperate conditions, which makes it ideal for high-altitude spots. After it’s settled in, Bhutan Pines need very little care – just the odd bit of pruning to keep them in shape or thin them out.
Bhutan Pines are popular in gardens for their stunning looks and ability to cope with tough conditions. They’re commonly planted in parks, large gardens, and arboretums, where their towering height and flowing needles create a real feature. Their thick foliage also offers good shade and shelter from wind.
Where it grows naturally, the Bhutan Pine has cultural importance and is sometimes harvested for timber in building and woodwork. Some communities also use it in traditional medicine.
