The Bhutan Pine Pinus wallichiana is a magnificent and impressive tree that reaches towering heights of 30 to 50 metres (98 to 164 feet), sometimes growing even taller at full maturity. This species displays a straight, cylindrical trunk covered in rough, greyish-brown bark that develops deep furrows as it ages. The branches grow horizontally and are evenly distributed along the trunk.

The most distinctive characteristic of the Bhutan Pine is its elegant, elongated needles. These needles usually grow 12 to 20 centimetres (5 to 8 inches) long and appear in bundles of five. They showcase a rich dark green colour and hang gracefully downwards, giving the tree its distinctive elegant appearance.

This pine variety develops egg-shaped cones measuring 8 to 15 centimetres (3 to 6 inches) long. These cones start off green before turning brown as they ripen. The cones hold the tree’s seeds and play a crucial role in reproduction.

The Bhutan Pine flourishes in mountainous areas with good drainage and plenty of sunshine. It adapts well to cold and temperate conditions, which makes it perfect for high-altitude locations. After establishment, these pines need minimal care, just occasional pruning for shape or thinning when needed.

Gardeners prize Bhutan Pines for their stunning looks and ability to cope with tough growing conditions. They’re commonly planted in parks, large gardens, and arboretums, where their impressive height and elegant needles create a stunning centrepiece. Their thick foliage also offers useful shade and wind shelter.

In its native habitat, the Bhutan Pine has cultural importance and sometimes provides timber for building and woodworking. Some communities also use it in traditional medicine.
