Masson’s Pine Pinus massoniana, also called Horsetail Pine or Chinese Red Pine, is an evergreen conifer from the Pinaceae family. This tree originally comes from eastern and southeastern Asia, particularly China and Taiwan.

This elegant pine grows quite tall, reaching 30-50 metres (98-164 feet) at maturity. Young trees have a neat pyramidal shape that gradually becomes more rounded and open with age. The bark starts brown to reddish-brown and develops attractive scaly patterns over time.

The needles are particularly striking – long and slender at 10-20 cm (4-8 inches) long. They grow in pairs called fascicles and have a glossy dark green colour that gives the tree real presence.

Masson’s Pine produces egg-shaped cones measuring 6-9 cm (2.4-3.5 inches) long. These cones begin green before turning brown when ripe. Inside are winged seeds that spread naturally on the wind.

This pine adapts well to various soil types and conditions. It handles different temperatures and thrives in areas with changeable weather patterns.

The impressive height and beautiful needles make Pinus massoniana popular for ornamental planting in parks and gardens.

Select a well-drained location with full to partial sunlight exposure. Masson’s Pine trees thrive in a variety of soil types, but slightly acidic, loamy soil is ideal.

The best time to plant a Pinus massoniana sapling in the UK is during the early spring or late autumn to allow the roots to establish before extreme temperatures.

Masson’s Pine requires regular watering, especially during dry spells. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mature trees are generally drought-resistant but young saplings need extra care.

Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree to help retain soil moisture and regulate soil temperature. This is particularly important during the UK’s variable climate.

Prune lightly to shape the tree and remove any dead or damaged branches. Be cautious not to over-prune, as Masson’s Pine trees generally have an attractive natural form.

Fertilise the tree sparingly with a balanced slow-release fertilizer in the early spring. Avoid excessive feeding, as these pines don’t require heavy fertilization.

Protection from harsh winds – where strong winds are common, consider planting Masson’s Pine in a sheltered spot or providing temporary windbreaks for young saplings until they become more established.

These young Masson’s Pine saplings may benefit from wrapping with burlap or similar material to protect against frost and extreme cold during the winter months. Fully hardy in all of the UK once mature.
