Monterey Pine *Pinus radiata* is planted more widely than any other pine across the globe, yet it faces endangerment in its native range. This species plays a vital role in timber production, and mature specimens create effective windbreaks. It thrives in areas with gentle, wet winters and rich soil conditions. Wild populations are found along California’s coastal strip, where these trees serve as overwintering sites for Monarch butterflies. The large cones split open when heated but often remain attached to branches for several years. These cones have an irregular shape at their base.

The needles form clusters of three, appearing bright green up close but looking dark from a distance. Mature specimens develop bark with very pronounced fissures.

Young plants require protection initially, but once settled they become quite thick and more resilient. Suitable for seaside locations.
