This Coast redwood variety known as ‘Steel Blue’ is a recent addition to the species, boasting some of the most intensely blue foliage among redwoods. Its blue colouration intensifies as the tree matures. ‘Steel Blue’ grows at a leisurely pace and takes its time establishing a dominant central stem. Gardeners aiming for a tall, upright ‘Steel Blue’ should consider using stakes to promote vertical growth of branches. Conversely, those preferring a low-spreading form should remove any emerging central leaders through pruning.

Coast Redwood ‘Steel Blue’ Sequoia sempervirens stands out as a remarkable garden specimen with the deepest blue foliage of any Coast Redwood variety. This distinctive colouring intensifies as the tree develops, providing a beautiful contrast alongside other plants in your garden.
The slow-growing nature of ‘Steel Blue’ makes it particularly manageable for gardeners who want to shape and control its development. This adaptable conifer can be trained into various forms – from an upright tree to a low, spreading shrub. For vertical growth, support the branches with stakes to encourage upward development. If you prefer a bushier, compact shape, simply prune out any central leaders as they appear.
The dense, tightly packed needles give ‘Steel Blue’ a full, textured appearance that brings something different to garden plantings. The foliage feels lovely to touch and looks impressive throughout the year.
This slow-growing conifer works well in smaller gardens or as a feature plant in larger spaces. The remarkable blue colour and flexible growing habit make it a real talking point that will catch the eye in any garden.
Currently the bluest Coast Redwood cultivar available.
