The Giant Sequoia Sequoiadendron giganteum, commonly called the giant redwood or Wellingtonia, appears on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List as “Endangered”. This classification indicates the species is at very high risk of becoming extinct in its natural habitat.

Historical logging and continued habitat destruction are the main causes behind the giant sequoia’s endangered status. Conservation work continues, but these magnificent ancient trees still battle threats from climate change, disease, and forest fires. Safeguarding their natural environments and cultivating your own specimens are vital actions to secure Sequoiadendron giganteum for the generations ahead.

Growing rapidly to truly impressive heights exceeding 30m (100ft), these magnificent giant conifers develop into genuinely spectacular specimens. The Wellingtonia displays a distinctive narrow cone shape with a pointed crown, featuring beautiful reddish-brown bark that catches the evening light beautifully.

Giant Sequoias Sequoiadendron giganteum – An extremely large and long-lasting evergreen that can exceed 100m in height. As an endangered species, you can help protect these ancient giants by planting your own. Once widespread across Europe and Asia, their final natural home is California’s West coast where wildfire and climate change pose serious risks.

Their popularity continues to grow here and you’ll spot them throughout the country in both private and public gardens. The tallest British specimen stands in Scotland – a 150-year-old tree reaching over 55m. They regularly appear in lists of the largest, tallest, oldest and most substantial trees.

Giant Sequoias Sequoiadendron giganteum hold numerous remarkable records:

1. Biggest Trees: Giant sequoias rank among Earth’s largest living things, with certain specimens soaring to incredible heights exceeding 300 feet (91 metres).
2. Ancient Trees: Though not quite as ancient as bristlecone pines, giant sequoias still count among our planet’s oldest trees, with some thought to be over 3,000 years old.
3. Greatest Volume: For pure bulk, nothing matches the giant sequoia. Their enormous trunks and hefty branches create their remarkable width and colossal size.
4. Biggest Tree by Volume: California’s Sequoia National Park houses the “General Sherman” tree, which claims the record for largest tree by volume at roughly 52,500 cubic feet (1,487 cubic metres).
5. Widest Tree by Circumference: The “General Grant” tree in Kings Canyon National Park, California, known as the “Nation’s Christmas Tree”, ranks as the second-largest by volume but has the widest base circumference at about 107 feet (32.6 metres).
6. Biggest Grove: Sequoia National Park’s Giant Forest holds a remarkable collection of giant sequoias and stands as one of the most famous and extensive groves of these magnificent trees.

These achievements make Sequoiadendron giganteum a truly remarkable species, drawing nature lovers and conservation work to protect these extraordinary giants for future generations.
