The Giant Sequoia *Sequoiadendron giganteum*, also called the giant redwood, appears on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List as “Endangered”. This classification indicates that the species is at very high risk of becoming extinct in the wild.

Past logging operations and continuing habitat destruction are the main causes behind the giant sequoia’s endangered status. Even with conservation work underway, these ancient giants still face dangers from climate change, disease, and wildfires. Safeguarding their natural environments and cultivating your own specimen are vital actions to secure the future of *Sequoiadendron giganteum* for coming generations.

Growing to heights well beyond 30m (100ft), these massive evergreen conifers develop quickly to reach their remarkable proportions. The Wellingtonia displays a distinctive narrow cone shape with a pointed crown, plus appealing reddish-brown bark that catches the light beautifully at sunset.

Giant Sequoia *Sequoiadendron giganteum* – An enormous and exceptionally long-lived evergreen that can exceed 100m in height. This is an endangered species. You can support conservation of these magnificent trees by planting your own. Once widespread across Europe and Asia, their final natural population survives on California’s West coast where wildfire and climate change pose ongoing risks.

They’re becoming more popular across Britain and can be spotted throughout most regions, in both private and public locations. The tallest stands in Scotland – a 150-year-old tree reaching beyond 55m. They regularly appear in top ten lists for Britain’s largest, tallest, oldest and broadest trees.

The Giant Sequoia *Sequoiadendron giganteum* boasts several remarkable achievements:

1. Massive Size: Giant sequoias rank among Earth’s largest living things, with certain trees soaring beyond 300 feet (91 metres) tall.
2. Ancient Age: Though not quite as old as bristlecone pines, giant sequoias remain amongst our planet’s most ancient trees, with some thought to be more than 3,000 years old.
3. Greatest Volume: For pure bulk, the giant sequoia stands alone. Its enormous trunk and hefty branches create incredible girth and colossal overall dimensions.
4. Biggest Tree by Volume: The “General Sherman” tree in California’s Sequoia National Park claims the record as the most voluminous tree, measuring roughly 52,500 cubic feet (1,487 cubic metres).
5. Widest Tree Base: The “General Grant” tree in Kings Canyon National Park, California, known as the “Nation’s Christmas Tree”, ranks as the second-largest by volume but has the broadest base at about 107 feet (32.6 metres) around.
6. Most Extensive Grove: The Giant Forest in Sequoia National Park holds a major collection of giant sequoias and stands as one of the most famous and widespread groves of these majestic trees.
