Swamp Cypress ‘Cascade Falls’ – Taxodium distichum is a remarkable weeping form of the classic swamp cypress, offering a graceful architectural presence with its cascading branches and delicate, feathery foliage. This cultivar displays a distinctly pendulous habit that sets it apart from the species, creating a living waterfall effect as its soft green needles drape elegantly downwards. During spring and summer, the foliage emerges in fresh lime-green tones before maturing to a rich mid-green, then transforming into spectacular shades of russet, bronze and amber before falling in autumn.

Despite its common name, this deciduous conifer is remarkably adaptable and thrives in a wide range of soil conditions. Whilst it naturally grows in wetland habitats in its native North America, ‘Cascade Falls’ performs beautifully in ordinary garden soils with average moisture levels. It particularly excels in damp or waterside positions where its reflection can be admired, making it an exceptional choice for planting beside ponds, streams or in boggy areas where many other trees struggle. The weeping form creates a focal point that draws the eye and provides year-round structural interest.

The soft, feathery foliage has a delicate texture that contrasts beautifully with broader-leaved plants and creates dappled shade beneath its canopy. Unlike evergreen conifers, this deciduous nature means it allows winter light through to underplanting once the needles have fallen, whilst the bare architectural framework provides sculptural winter interest. The bark develops attractive fissures and a rich reddish-brown colour as the tree matures, adding further ornamental value.

Care Guide 

‘Cascade Falls’ is hardy throughout most regions and tolerates temperatures well below freezing once established. Plant in full sun to partial shade, though the best foliage colour and growth occur in sunnier positions. This tree is unfussy about soil pH and grows well in acidic, neutral or slightly alkaline conditions.

Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish a strong root system. Once established, trees in moisture-retentive soils require minimal supplementary watering, though those in drier positions benefit from irrigation during prolonged dry spells. Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth, and mulch around the base with organic matter to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing any dead or damaged branches in late winter. The weeping habit develops naturally without intervention, though you can remove lower branches if desired to create clearance beneath the canopy. This cultivar has excellent disease resistance and rarely suffers from significant pest or disease problems.

The tree is fully deciduous, shedding its needles each autumn—this is entirely normal and not a sign of stress. In waterlogged conditions, it may develop distinctive ‘knees’ (pneumatophores) that emerge from the roots, adding to its unique character.
