Rheingold Thuja – Thuja occidentalis ‘Rheingold’ is a special variety of eastern arborvitae that stands out for its stunning colour changes and compact growth. This slow-growing evergreen conifer develops into a medium-sized, oval shrub with amber-yellow foliage touched with bronze tones that becomes richer and brighter during winter months.

The ‘Rheingold’ variety is prized for its brilliant golden-yellow leaves in summer that shift to copper or orange shades when temperatures drop, particularly through winter. The soft, feathery foliage grows in flattened sprays that create an attractive texture.

This dwarf conifer grows at a steady pace, reaching around 3–5 feet in height and width over ten years. Its naturally rounded, globe-like shape makes it ideal for gardeners wanting plants that need little pruning to keep their form.

Cultural Requirements
‘Rheingold’ does well in well-drained soil and adapts to various soil conditions, much like other Thuja varieties. Full sun suits it best, though it manages in partial shade too. For the most vibrant golden colour, a sunny spot works best. Once settled, it copes with both dry and moist conditions reasonably well, though very waterlogged sites should be avoided.

Uses in Gardens
The compact size and brilliant colour make it perfect for:
1. Feature Planting: Creating interest in smaller gardens or mixed borders.
2. Foundation Areas: Close to buildings or along edges.
3. Rock Gardens: Its size and bright colour work well here.
4. Hedging: Plant several together for screening.

Maintenance
Very easy to look after. Regular pruning isn’t needed, but light shaping now and then keeps it tidy, especially for a more formal appearance.

Hardiness
‘Rheingold’ handles harsh winters well, surviving temperatures down to -20C.

Potential Issues
Though quite robust, ‘Rheingold’ can occasionally face problems common to Thuja plants, such as spider mites or leaf blight. Keeping an eye on the plant and acting quickly helps sort any issues.
