Eastern Hemlock ‘Fantana’ Tsuga canadensis ‘Fantana’ is a charming evergreen conifer that adds elegance to gardens. This neat variety of the Eastern Hemlock works well in smaller gardens or as a feature plant in bigger spaces. ‘Fantana’ develops into a thick, rounded form with softly curved branches, giving it a gentle fountain-like look that brings movement and interest to your garden.

The leaves of ‘Fantana’ consist of tiny, flat needles in deep green. These needles sit in a delicate pattern along the branches, making the tree look thick and healthy. When spring arrives, fresh growth appears in a paler, vibrant green tone, making a striking contrast against the existing leaves.

This steady-growing tree usually grows to about 1.5 to 2 metres tall and wide after 10 years, keeping it a practical size for most gardens. Its neat habit means it won’t take over your garden, while still giving you year-round appeal and structure.

‘Fantana’ suits the British climate well, doing best in partial shade through to full sun. It’s perfect for bringing a natural, woodland atmosphere to your garden or for providing a gentle background to colourful plants. The thick foliage also makes it brilliant for privacy screening or as shelter from wind in smaller gardens.

Eastern Hemlock ‘Fantana’ is fairly easy to care for. Plant it in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. While it can tolerate full sun in cooler areas, it prefers partial shade, especially protection from harsh afternoon sun. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, it’s quite drought-tolerant but appreciates consistent moisture. Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch away from the trunk. ‘Fantana’ doesn’t require regular pruning, but you can lightly shape it in late winter if needed.
