Care Guide

White Spruce thrives in full sun to partial shade, though the best foliage colour and densest growth occurs in sunny positions. The species tolerates a wide range of soil types, from sandy to clay-based, provided drainage is reasonable. While established trees show good drought tolerance, young specimens benefit from regular watering during their first two growing seasons, particularly during dry spells in spring and summer.

Plant in autumn or early spring when soil conditions are workable. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and incorporate organic matter if your soil is particularly poor. Position the tree so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil surface. Water thoroughly after planting and apply a mulch of bark chips or well-rotted compost around the base, keeping it clear of the trunk.

White Spruce requires minimal maintenance once established. No regular pruning is necessary as the tree develops its characteristic pyramidal shape naturally. Remove any dead or damaged branches in late winter if needed. Feed young trees in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth, though established specimens rarely require supplementary feeding in reasonably fertile soil.

The species shows excellent resistance to most pests and diseases common in British gardens. Good air circulation and avoiding waterlogged soil conditions will keep your tree healthy.
