The Hinoki cypress *Chamaecyparis obtusa* is also known as the Japanese cypress. The ‘Karamachiba’ cultivar stands out beautifully thanks to its colour changes throughout the seasons.
‘Karamachiba’ is loved for its delicate, lace-like foliage that develops lovely bronze hues during winter.
This variety grows at a slow pace and stays nicely compact in size.
‘Karamachiba’ shares the same preferences as other *Chamaecyparis obtusa* cultivars, needing well-drained soil. It’s happy in various soil types provided they don’t hold too much water. Full sun suits it well, though it’s equally content in partial shade.
The gorgeous colours and neat form of ‘Karamachiba’ make it perfect for adding interest to rock gardens, borders, or as a feature plant in pots and containers. It works brilliantly in mixed plantings where it creates lovely colour and texture contrasts alongside other plants.
Pruning is seldom needed with ‘Karamachiba’ because of its naturally slow growth. Water regularly while it’s establishing and during dry periods, but avoid waterlogged conditions.
*Chamaecyparis obtusa* ‘Karamachiba’ is extremely hardy once established and can cope with temperatures as low as -20C.
