This variety of Sawara Cypress *Chamaecyparis pisifera* stands out for its bright yellow foliage, perfect for gardeners wanting to bring lasting colour and interest to their gardens throughout the year.

‘Sungold’ has a slow to moderate growth habit, usually putting on around 10-15cm each year. It will eventually reach 1-1.5 metres tall, forming a neat, rounded shape that tends to spread outwards more than upwards. This compact size makes it perfect for smaller gardens, rockeries, or adding a splash of colour to mixed plantings and pots.

The main attraction is certainly the foliage. The delicate, needle-like leaves display a stunning golden-yellow shade that stays strong all year round, often becoming more vivid during winter months. This provides wonderful contrast alongside other green plants and brings a cheerful brightness to gardens even during dull weather.

Despite looking quite delicate, ‘Sungold’ is surprisingly tough. It suits our climate well and grows happily in both full sun and partial shade, though the colour develops best with plenty of sunlight. It likes well-drained, slightly acidic soil but will adapt to different soil conditions. It also copes well with urban environments, making it suitable for many different garden situations.

This conifer is popular with gardeners for its distinctive colour and texture. It works brilliantly as a feature plant where the golden leaves will draw the eye. Alternatively, you can plant multiple specimens to form a low, colourful hedge or ground cover. It suits both contemporary and traditional garden styles, bringing year-round warmth and style.

Those interested in wildlife will find that the thick growth of ‘Sungold’ offers good shelter for small birds and insects, particularly during winter. The bushy form provides protection from bad weather and predators.

Sawara Cypress ‘Sungold’ is relatively easy to care for, which is good news for UK gardeners. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained, slightly acidic soil, but it’s adaptable to various soil types. When you first plant it, water regularly for the first growing season to help it establish. After that, it appreciates consistent moisture but can tolerate short periods of drought. Feed it with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in spring if desired, but it generally doesn’t require much feeding. Pruning isn’t usually necessary unless you want to maintain a specific shape or size. If you need to prune, do it in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
