Korean Pine ‘Golden Eye’ – Pinus koraiensis is an exceptional compact evergreen conifer that originated as a witch’s broom mutation on the variegated ‘Oculis Draconis’ cultivar, discovered by the renowned plantsman Eric Bizon. This exciting introduction combines the striking golden variegation of its parent with a much more compact, globose growth habit, making it perfect for smaller gardens where space is at a premium.

The variegated foliage creates a beautiful display throughout the year, with needles arranged in bundles of five that feature distinctive golden-yellow banding. This variegation pattern is particularly pronounced during the growing season, creating a luminous effect that brightens shaded corners and adds year-round interest. The compact, rounded form develops naturally without pruning, creating a dense, cushion-like shape that works wonderfully in mixed borders, rock gardens, or as a container specimen.

This dwarf pine is considerably more manageable than the species, which can reach towering heights. The ‘Golden Eye’ selection maintains its tight, globose habit, making it an ideal choice for contemporary garden designs or traditional settings where a focal point is needed. The golden variegation becomes more intense in full sun, though the plant tolerates partial shade well, adapting to various garden situations with ease.

This hardy conifer thrives in the temperate British climate and tolerates a wide range of conditions once established. Plant in well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH for best results. While it adapts to various soil types, avoid waterlogged conditions which can lead to root problems. Choose a position in full sun to partial shade, though the golden variegation will be most pronounced with at least six hours of direct sunlight daily.

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system, then reduce watering as the plant becomes established. Mature specimens are relatively drought-tolerant and require minimal supplementary watering except during prolonged dry spells. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it away from the trunk to prevent rot.

Feed annually in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants or conifers. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers which can reduce the intensity of the golden variegation. This cultivar requires no regular pruning to maintain its compact shape, though you can remove any dead or damaged growth in late winter if necessary.

Korean Pine ‘Golden Eye’ is remarkably hardy and withstands cold winters without protection. It’s resistant to most pests and diseases, though you should watch for adelgids or needle cast in damp conditions. Good air circulation helps prevent fungal issues. This low-maintenance conifer is suitable for coastal gardens as it tolerates salt-laden winds better than many other pines.
