The Stone Pine *Pinus pinea*, sometimes known as the Umbrella Pine, is a brilliant tree that brings a touch of Mediterranean charm to your garden. This slow-growing evergreen eventually reaches heights of 15-25 metres, developing a distinctive spreading crown that looks just like an enormous umbrella. The bark is thick and gnarled, developing attractive reddish-brown tones with age. The long needles, measuring 10-20 cm, grow in pairs and create a dense, dark green canopy that provides wonderful shade.
The standout features are the large oval cones, which take a leisurely three years to ripen fully. These contain the prized pine nuts that chefs love so much. You’ll need plenty of patience though – these trees won’t start producing nuts until they’re around 20 years old. They’re hardy specimens that cope well with coastal conditions and dry spells once they’re established. In Britain, they thrive best in the warmer southern regions, where they make striking focal points in large gardens or public spaces.
Plant your Stone Pine in full sun and well-drained soil. It prefers sandy or gravelly soils and doesn’t tolerate waterlogged conditions. Once established, it’s very drought-tolerant and requires little watering. Pruning is generally unnecessary except to remove dead or damaged branches. Be aware that this tree needs plenty of space to develop its full, characteristic shape. In colder areas of the UK, it may benefit from some protection from harsh winter winds, especially when young.

They are 3 year old saplings. Usually about 80/100cm tall and will require a bit of extra care in their first few Winters. A sheltered spot is needed, especially when young. Does well growing by the coast and is decorative in a large pot and in this way can be moved out of the weather when necessary.

Seeds
We generally send seeds out via Royal Mail Second Class. It’s the safest and easiest way to deliver seeds.
Young Trees
Young trees (Less than 1.2m) will generally be sent via Evri.
Larger quantities of young trees will be sent via ParcelForce or pallet courier..
Huge Trees
Some of our huge trees are too tall to be sent via a courier. They are generally only available for collection from our nursery, local delivery or via occasionally pallet courier. This will be shown on the individual product page.
